Pioneers’ Balanced Offense Comes Up Short At Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team moved to 0-7 on the season with a 10-7 loss to the Hartford Hawks at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium Wednesday night.

Seven different Pioneers scored Wednesday night. Senior midfielder Shane Foley (South Brunswick, N.H.) scored in his seventh consecutive game with Matt King (Brewster, N.Y.) scoring in his sixth straight game. Stephen Kontos (Danvers, Mass.) won 11 of 19 faceoffs and led Sacred Heart with four ground balls. Tim Caton (East Rochester, N.Y.), Alex Miller (Ridgewood, N.J.), Cody Marquis (Londonderry, N.H.), and Seth Richard (Derry, N.H.) each had three ground balls.

Sacred Heart (0-7) opened the scoring when Caton went coast-to-coast for his third goal of the season, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead with 13:40 to play in the opening quarter. Hartford (3-3) tied the game at the 11:22 mark of the first when Kevin O'Shea scooped a ground ball and fired a shot past Flood to make the score 1-1. Trevor Dauses (Glen Arm, Md.) put the Pioneers back in front with a goal at the 10:13 mark, but the Hawks tied the game 2-2 with 4:12 to play in the quarter on a Brad Hutton tally.

Hartford took the lead with 11:22 remaining in the second quarter when Austin Gorman notched a man-up goal to make the score 3-2. The Hawks extended the lead to 4-2 with 8:14 to play in the half on a goal by Drew Haig. The lead grew to 5-2 for Hartford before King scored to end the Hawks' 3-0 run with a goal at the 4:36 mark. The two sides then traded goals to end the half, with a Joe Burek (Kinnelon, N.J.) man-up goal from Miller making the score 6-4 before halftime.

Sacred Heart closed to within one at the start of the third quarter. The Pioneers drew a 1:00 penalty 50 seconds into the third and capitalized. Marquis scored Sacred Heart's second extra-man goal of the game to make the score 6-5 with 13:35 remaining in the quarter. Kontos then won the ensuing faceoff, leading to a Mike Mawdsley (Innisfil, Ont.) goal that tied the score 6-6 with 12:33 left in the third. However, Hartford took back the lead with 10:10 to play in the quarter on O'Shea's second goal of the game. The Hawks tacked on two more goals in the third to take a 9-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Foley cut the Hartford lead to two, 9-7, with his goal at the 8:54 mark of the fourth quarter. Sacred Heart outshot the Hawks 8-6 in the final period, but Hartford added a goal with under four minutes left to play to make the final score 10-7.

Hartford outshot Sacred Heart 40-35 Wednesday night and had 40 ground balls to the Pioneers' 35. Sacred Heart had 18 turnovers as the Hawks committed 13 turnovers. The Pioneers were 2-for-3 with the extra man as Hartford converted twice on six man-up opportunities.

Sacred Heart wraps up its non-conference schedule on Saturday, March 23 when the Pioneers host Vermont at Campus Field. The opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
