SHU Lacrosse Opens NEC Championship Against Bryant Thursday at 1 p.m.

Setting The Scene… The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team makes his first appearance in the postseason since 2001 on Thursday when it faces Bryant in the NEC Championship.

Series History vs. Bryant… Bryant leads the all-time series against the Pioneers 5-0.

Last Time Out … Sacred Heart wrapped up the regular season last Saturday with a 12-7 loss at Bryant. The loss put the Pioneers as the number four seed in the NEC Championship. Five different Pioneers had two points in the game. Matt King and Mike Mawdsley each scored two goals. Cody Marquis added a goal and an assist. Matt Gannon and Alex Miller both had two assists.

YOU AGAIN?...  Thursday's NEC Tournament semifinals feature rematches of games played on Saturday. Sacred Heart lost at Bryant 12-7, with Robert Morris defeating Quinnipiac 9-7 earlier in the day. Had Sacred Heart won, the Pioneers would have won the NEC regular season title and hosted the championship.

GANNON GETTING ASSISTS…  Junior attackman Matt Gannon leads the NEC in assists, averaging 2.54 per game this season. He is also fifth in the nation in assists per game. Gannon has 34 assists this season, the most for a Pioneer in a single season since the program moved to Division I. He has had at least two assists in 10 games this season. Gannon was named NEC Player of the Week on April 8 after dishing out a single-game program record seven assists at Wagner.

NEWBOLD COAST TO COAST… Junior defenseman Andrew Newbold scored in his second straight game Saturday at Bryant. He has three goals this season, equaling his mark from last season. Newbold has caused 21 turnovers this season after having 12 caused turnovers in 2012.

KING'S TALLY…  Senior midfielder Matt King had his fourth consecutive multi-goal game on Saturday, scoring twice at Bryant. King has nine multi-goal games this season and has scored in each of the last 12 games. He has 26 goals this season after scoring just 17 in his first three seasons. King is the only Pioneer to have double-digit goals and assists this season.

IF ANYONE CAN, KONTOS CAN… Senior Stephen Kontos is seventh in the nation in faceoff percentage, winning 61% of his draws. Kontos has improved his percentage every season at Sacred Heart. He also has a career-high four points this season on a goal and three assists. Kontos has won over 50% of his faceoffs in 10 of 13 games this season.
