Sacred Heart Picked Fifth In NEC Men’s Lacrosse Preseason Coaches’ Poll

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team was picked to finished fifth in the Northeast Conference as the league released its 2014 Men's Lacrosse Preseason Coaches' Poll on Monday.

First-Year Head Coach Jon Basti takes over a Pioneer squad that is coming off a 3-11 season in 2013, having reached the NEC tournament for the first time. Sacred Heart returns two All-NEC performers from a year ago in First Team defenseman Andrew Newbold (Loveland, Ohio) and All-Rookie midfielder Alex Dodge (Smithtown, N.Y.). The Pioneers also return the senior attack trio of Matt Gannon (Huntington, N.Y.), Mike Mawdsley (Innisfil, Ont.), and Cody Marquis (Londonderry, N.H.).

Bryant, the two-time defending NEC champions, was the unanimous choice atop the coaches' poll. Robert Morris and conference newcomer Hobart were picked to tie for second, followed by another conference newcomer in Saint Joseph's. Mount St. Mary's was picked sixth with Wagner rounding out the poll.

Sacred Heart opens the 2014 season on Sunday, Feb. 16 with a 12 p.m. game against Binghamton at Campus Field.
