Men’s Lacrosse Hangs On To Win At Hobart 10-9

GENEVA, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team used a 7-1 run to take a 10-6 lead in the third quarter over the Hobart Statesmen Saturday at Boswell Field, but had to hold on for a 10-9 win in the first-ever meeting between the two schools on the lacrosse field.

Alex Miller (Ridgewood, N.J.) led all players with a season-high six points, recording three goals and three assists. Matt Gannon (Huntington, N.Y.), Mike Mawdsley (Innisfil, Ont.), and Bryce Jurk (Burlington, Ont.) each had two goals in the game. Gannon had three points, as did Brian Masi (Smithtown, N.Y.) on a goal and two assists. Andrew Newbold (Loveland, Ohio) led Sacred Heart with five groundballs as Jared Carrier (Crownsville, Md.) added three. Ryan Hughes (Bayport, N.Y.) made nine saves in goal.

Both teams scored within the first two minutes Saturday. Hobart (3-7, 2-2 NEC) scored at the 13:31 mark of the first quarter on a goal by Jake McHenry. Sacred Heart (3-7, 2-1 NEC) won the ensuing faceoff and scored 31 seconds later as Masi assisted on a Miller goal. The Statesmen took back the lead with 11:41 left in the first on a goal by Brendan Saylor. The Pioneers committed six turnovers in the first quarter and had just one shot as Hobart took a 3-1 lead with seven seconds left in the period on McHenry's second tally of the game.

Matt Opsahl capped off a 3-0 Hobart run with a goal at the 11:32 mark of the second quarter, making the score 4-1. The Pioneers got back within a goal, 4-3 as Mawdsley fired home a Miller feed with 10:13 to play in the half and Jurk scored with 6:08 left in the half. Hobart won the faceoff after Jurk's goal and scored eight seconds later, taking a 5-3 lead. Mawdsley notched his second goal of the game with 4:47 to play in the second quarter, getting an assist from Gannon to get the Pioneers within a goal, 5-4. Gannon then tied the game, 5-5, with a goal at the 2:01 mark of the second. Sacred Heart took its first lead of the game with three seconds left in the second quarter, as Miller assisted on Gannon's second tally of the day that gave the Pioneers a 6-5 lead heading into halftime.

Sacred Heart built on its 3-0 run to end the first half with two goals in the first three minutes of the third quarter. Miller scored 31 seconds into the period with an assist from Masi to make the score 7-5. Masi then scored at the 12:00 mark, getting an assist from Miller, to put the Pioneers up 8-5. Hobart got back on the board with 9:41 left in the third on a goal by Opsahl, but Sacred Heart answered with Miller's third goal of the day to give the Pioneers a 9-6 lead with 7:17 remaining in the quarter. Jurk scored his second goal of the game with 1:50 to play in the third, getting an assist from Thomas Diplacido (Wrentham, Mass.) to extend the Sacred Heart advantage to 10-6. The Pioneers' 7-1 run was ended by a McHenry goal with 45 seconds left in the quarter.

The Sacred Heart offense went cold in the fourth quarter, as Hobart goalie Peter Zonino made four saves on eight shots as the Pioneers were held scoreless in the final quarter. The Statesmen scored twice in the fourth quarter, as goals by Cam Stone and Zach Reed made the score 10-9 with 3:43 to play. The Sacred Heart defense made the one goal lead hold up, forcing two turnovers in final minutes to end the game.

Hobart outshot Sacred Heart 37-25 for the game, including a 9-1 margin in the first quarter. The Statesmen also held a 27-24 edge in groundballs. Sacred Heart forced 16 Hobart turnovers while committing 13.

The Pioneers are back in action on Tuesday, April 8 with a 7 p.m. game at Holy Cross.
