Pioneers Score Last Nine Goals To Win At Holy Cross 12-11 In Overtime

WORCESTER, Mass. – Trailing 11-3 heading into the fourth quarter Tuesday night, the Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team outscored the Holy Cross Crusaders 8-0 in the final period to force overtime at Holy Cross Field. Senior Mike Mawdsley (Innisfil, Ont.) scored the game-winning goal with 2:02 to play in overtime, leading the Pioneers to a 12-11 win.

Holy Cross (3-9) scored first Tuesday night, as Sean Wilkinson found Kevin Lux for the opening tally at the 10:12 mark of the first quarter. Sacred Heart (4-7) tied the game 1-1 with 8:50 left in the first when Brian Masi (Smithtown, N.Y.) ran right up the field and fired from 10 yards out. Cody Marquis (Londonderry, N.H.) gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead at the 6:58 mark, dodging around the goal and scoring from close range. Holy Cross tied the 2-2 with 4:20 left in first on Kyle Kadlick's first goal of the season.

After an up-and-down start to the second quarter, Holy Cross took back the lead with 10:35 remaining in the half on a goal by Clay Haarmann that made the score 3-2. The Crusaders extended the lead when Wilkinson and Ben Williams scored six seconds apart, taking a 5-2 lead with 8:46 to play in the quarter. Holy Cross led 7-2 before Alex Dodge (Smithtown, N.Y.) snapped the Crusaders' 5-0 run with a goal at the 3:56 mark, assisted by Masi. Lux scored his second goal of the game with 2:05 to play in the second, giving Holy Cross an 8-3 lead that held up to halftime.

Holy Cross scored three more goals in the third quarter to take an 11-3 lead into the final period. Sacred Heart snapped a 21:55 scoring drought with a goal by Marquis at the 12:01 mark of the fourth quarter. Miller cut the deficit to six, 11-5, when he scored with 10:23 to play. The Pioneers scored three goals in the span of 1:31, with Miller scoring twice, to make the score 11-8 with 6:01 left in the fourth. Masi and Marquis scored within a minute of each other to get Sacred Heart within one goal, 11-10, with 4:11 to play. Marquis then tied the game 11-11 at the 2:54 mark, with an assist from Matt Gannon (Huntington, N.Y.) who had three assists in the quarter, with his fifth goal of the game. Holy Cross fired five shots after the Pioneers tied the game, but didn't put one on goal as the game headed to overtime.

The Crusaders won the opening faceoff of overtime. After shots by Marc Buermann and Frank Gaul went wide, Pioneers goalie Jon Flood (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made a save on a shot by Terry McKenna. Sacred Heart cleared and got the ball to Mawdsley, who dodged the crease and scored with 2:02 to play in the extra period to give the Pioneers' the 12-11 win.  

Sacred Heart was outshot 45-35 for the game, but outshot Holy Cross 14-11 in the fourth quarter in overtime. Holy Cross held a 35-19 edge in groundballs and won 18 of 26 faceoffs. Marquis' five goals were a game-high, with Miller adding three goals. Masi had three points on two goals and an assist. This is Sacred Heart's second consecutive one-goal win, having won at Hobart on Saturday 10-9.

The Pioneers return to Campus Field on Tuesday, April 15 for a 7 p.m. game against Wagner.
