FAIRFIELD, CT (February 27, 2010) - Junior attack Corey Zindel scored the game winner, for Marist, 2:09 into the overtime period to hand the Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team an 11-10 defeat at Campus Field, Saturday evening. The Pioneers dropped to 1-2 on the season, while the Red Foxes earned a win in their first contest of the season.
The game went back and forth and featured seven instances with the score tied. Senior attack Ryan Sharkey led the Marist offense with four goals. Classmate Matt Teichmann added three goals, including a score to even the game at 10 with 2:27 remaining in the fourth quarter. Zindel proved to be the top playmaker for the Red Foxes, as he contributed four assists and two scores.
Trailing 8-7 with fewer than nine minutes to go in the fourth, SHU sophomore Matt Ferrino (Orchard Park, NY) scored his second goal of the game, this one on the man-up, to tie the game at eight. Marist regained the lead with Sharkey's fourth goal of the night, less than two minutes later. The Pioneers struck back with goals from senior Evan Morgan (Ashburn, VA) and junior Tim Russo (Lindenhurst, NY) to take the lead with 3:15 to play.
Senior attack Jon Flood (Hauppauge, NY) netted the first goal of the game for SHU, midway through the first quarter, on his way to recording a hat trick. Russo finished the game with one goal and a pair of assists.
Freshman goalie Brendan Price earned the win by stopping eight shots for the Red Foxes. In the cage for the Pioneers, senior Tom Trgo (N.Merrick, NY) saved 18 shots.
Marist outshot Sacred Heart 43-28, for the game. The Pioneers held the Red Foxes to one extra-man goal in five opportunities, while SHU converted on one of its two chances.
The Pioneers play the final game of a four game home stand next Saturday against Manhattan at 1:00 pm on Campus Field.
