Pioneers Fight Past Fairfield Stags, 13-9, in Florida

BOCA RATON, FL (March 6, 2005) - Freshman Kieran Carney (Yorktown Heights, NY) scored three goals and assisted on four others to lead the Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team to a 13-9 win over Fairfield University in Boca Raton, Florida. The Pioneers erased an early 4-1 first quarter deficit to lead 7-6 at the half and tacked on four more in the third quarter en route to their first win of 2005. The Stags lose for the first time this year and fall to 2-1 with the loss.
"A great team effort out of our guys," said head coach Tom Mariano. "We dealt with the adversity of being down early and rose to the occasion. A good come from behind win early in the season give us confidence and gets our guys rallying around each other."
Fairfield's Mike Bocklet scored the first goal of the game and was answered by SHU's Peter Greco (Hamburg, NY). Bocklet scored again followed by Kyle Herman and Greg Downing for a 4-1 lead at the 5:19 mark of the first quarter.
SHU sophomore Joe Cavagnaro (Kinnelon, NJ) snapped the streak and Carney netted is first with 39.6 left in the first. Greco found the back of the net for his second with 7.5 left as SHU notched it up 4-4 at the end of one.
The Pioneers opened the second quarter with a man-up goal off the stick of Greco followed by a score from sophomore Derek Platt (Annapolis, MD) to give SHU a 6-4 lead. Fairfield answered off the stick of Downing but SHU's Greco scored his game-high fourth just over a minute later to lead 7-5 with 8:49 to play. Fairfield tacked one more to trail 7-6 at the half.
Sacred Heart dominated the third quarter, scoring four times while holding the Stags scoreless. SHU goalie Thomas Hind (Farmingdale, NY) made four saves in the third and in the fourth to keep Fairfield at bay.
Carney opened the scoring in the second half at the 12:47 mark and then assisted on a pair of Platt goals as the Pioneers began to pull away. Sophomore defenseman Chase Caruso (Huntington, NY) closed out the period, scoring unassisted with 34.8 second left in the quarter.
The Pioneers scored again to start the fourth quarter on Carney's third tally, making it 11-6 at the 8:52 mark. The Stags tacked on three late goals to cut the margin to 13-9.
Added to Carney's seven points, Platt finished with three goals and two assists and Greco had four goals. Hind finished with 12 saves in earning the win. Senior Blake Reardon (St. Michael, MN) won 14 face-offs and had a team-leading 12 ground balls for the Pioneers.
For Fairfield, Bocklet and Downing each scored three goals and added an assist. Herman had a goal and an assist in the loss.
The Pioneers continue their Florida trip this Wednesday when they play Robert Morris in West Palm Beach at 7:00 pm.
