JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team went into halftime knotted up at 6-6. However, the second half was all Dolphins as they outscored the Pioneers 11-1 en route to a 17-7 victory. The loss dropped SHU to 1-4 on the season, while JU improved to 4-3.
The Pioneers held a 5-3 lead midway through the second quarter after sophomore Matt Ferrino (Orchard Park, NY) notched his eighth goal of the season. The Dolphins answered with a pair of goals by freshman Ryan Serville and a score by sophomore Jeremy Tissenbaum to take a 6-5 lead. Senior Timmy Katz (Freeport, NY) found the back of the net with 47 seconds remaining in the first half to send the two teams to the locker room tied at six.
JU's offensive attack came out and scored 10 unanswered in the second half. Freshmen Nick Scalzo and Cameron Mann each scored a goal in the first minute of the third quarter. Serville finished the game with four goals and three assists. Scalzo and Tissenbaum both recorded a hat trick.
For SHU, Katz scored four goals and collected an assist. He now has a team-leading 14 goals on the year.
Senior Brad Hester made the start in net and earned the win by making nine saves for the Dolphins. Senior Tom Trgo (N. Merrick, NY) stopped 22 shots in the loss for the Pioneers.
Sacred Heart returns to action March 20 at Hofstra at 1:00 pm.
