Fairfield, CT - Jay Card scored two goals, including the game winner and Adam Gvozden made seven saves in net to preserve a 6-5 win for number six Hofstra over Sacred Heart in the Colonial Athletic Association Opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Campus Field. Junior Timmy Katz (Freeport, NY) scored four of the Pioneers five goals.
In a game where Hofstra had more opportunities, outshooting Sacred Heart 36-22 for the game, goaltender Zack Frank (Islip Terrace, NY) kept the Pioneers within striking distance by making 13 saves. Senior Zach Smith (Chittenden, VT) was outstanding on face-offs, wining 11 of his 14 attempts on the day.
The Pride broke a scoreless game with just under six minutes into the first quarter as Stephen Bentz ripped home a shot on a feed from Michael Colleluori. Katz evened the score just over a minute later. Colleluori found the back of the net with 3:21 left on a man-up goal to give the Pride a one goal lead after one period.
The Pioneers outplayed the Pride in the second stanza, scoring two goals to take the lead into the locker-room. Dennis Gannon (Huntington, NY) found the back of the net with 2:43 left to tie the score. Then, in the final moments, as the Pioneer cycled for the final shot, Katz rifled a shot from a hard angle that just snuck under the crossbar as time expired. The goal was the payoff of a ton of offensive pressure in which the Pioneers hit three posts in attempts to take the lead. Hofstra controlled the third quarter just as the Pioneers dominated the second. The Pride scored a pair of goals of their own to regain the lead. Brad Loizeuax scored four minutes into the quarter to tie the score once again. Card put the Pride back on top with six minutes remaining.
After a quiet start to the fourth quarter, the game reached a frantic pace in the final minutes. Katz scored his fourth goal of the day with the Pioneers a man-up and 6:43 remaining to tie the score again. However, the Pride answered right back as, off the ensuing face-off, Mike Sundin came down and zipped a shot past Frank for a 5-4 Pride lead.
Card scored his second goal of the day with 2:15 remaining and appeared to have the game in hand. However, the Pioneers wouldn't go away as Katz found the back of the net with 1:16 left to make it a one goal game yet again. Sophomore Evan Morgan (Ashburn, VA) would get a shot off in the final seconds but Gvozden made the save and the Pride cleared the ball to seal the victory.
Sacred Heart is back in action next Saturday as the Pioneers welcome Villanova to Campus Field. Opening face-off Is set for 7:00 pm.
