MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (March 25, 2007) - Sacred Heart junior captain Tony Tanzi (Mahopac, NY) scored three goals and a picked-up an assist as the Pioneers used a five-goal run through the third and fourth quarters to earn a 10-7 win at Robert Morris Sunday afternoon in the Colonials Athletic Association opener for both clubs. SHU held the Colonials scoreless for just over 27 minutes in the second half to help fuel the rally en route to their second win on the year.
The Pioneers (2-3, 1-0 CAA) opened the scoring as senior Peter Greco (Hamburg, NY) converted a feed from freshman Joe Caridi (East Northport, NY) at 10:27. RMU's Andrew Watt answered unassisted just over a minute later before Greco struck again, this time unassisted and man-up at 6:31 for a 2-1 lead. The Colonials got a man-up goal of their own from Alex Sewell before SHU freshman Evan Morgan (Ashburn, VA) closed the first quarter with an unassisted score to give the Pioneers a 3-2 lead.
The two teams continued to trade goals in the second quarter, with all the scoring coming in the first six minutes of action. The Colonials tacking on another man-up score from Truett Valentine and added a man-down tally from Carlo Sunseri. SHU's Tanzi scored a pair in the quarter as the teams went to the break deadlocked at 5-5. The shots were nearly dead even at the half with each team holding a decided edge in either quarter. RMU controlled the first, out shooting SHU 12-5 while the Pioneers answered in the second with a 12-6 edge.
Robert Morris' Michael Flemming gave his team a 6-5 lead with 13:47 to go in the third, his second of the game, but the Colonials offense would fizzle out from there, going scoreless until 1:29 left in the fourth quarter. The Pioneers took full advantage, scoring five straight during the drought to take control and coast to the win.
Tanzi got the run started at 11:51, scoring off a feed from sophomore Bobby Rushton (West Islip, NY). Tanzi set up sophomore Bobby Karl (Clifton Park, NY) for a marker at 3:57 that gave SHU the lead for good. Freshman Dan Mesler (Branchport, NY) made it 8-6 just over a minute later and the Pioneers got a man-up opportunity off the ensuing face-off when RMU's Aaron Botazzo was called for unnecessary roughness.
SHU wasted little time in capitalizing as freshman Timmy Katz (Freeport, NY) buried an unassisted goal at 1:20 to close out the quarter and give the Pioneers a 9-6 lead heading into the fourth. Neither team managed much offense over the final 15 minutes until Sacred Heart's Nicholas Russo (Lindenhurst, NY) capped off the run with his third goal of the season at 2:48 off a pass from senior Casey Kirch (Newtown, CT).
The Colonials, who out shot SHU 10-5 in the fourth, scored at 1:29 on Fleming's third of the day to produce the final score, 10-7. Sal Barcia played the entire second half and made seven saves in taking the loss.
The Pioneers return home to host a CAA match-up with Drexel on Saturday, March 31st at 1:00 pm.
