Pioneers Handed 19-8 Loss at #2 Hofstra
April 5, 2006
HEMPSTEAD, NY (April 5, 2006) - The #2 ranked Hofstra Pride got a combined 13 points from junior Athan Iannucci and freshman Tom Dooley to come away with a 19-8 win over visiting Sacred Heart in Colonial Athletic Association action Wednesday night. The Pride broke open a 5-5 game with nine minutes to go in the second quarter, scoring nine-straight into the third to take command en route to their 8th-straight win.
There was a flurry of activity in the opening minutes of the game with the Pioneers (1-8, 1-2 CAA) jumping out on top after the opening face-off. Sophomore Tony Tanzi (Mahopac, NY) bolted up the right side untouched and placed his shot in the top right corner 42 seconds in. The Pride answered at 14:33 off the stick of Tim Treubig and made it 2-1 just 13 seconds later as Tom Dooley scooped up a rebounded shot and buried it.
Hofstra (8-1, 2-0 CAA) made it 3-1 at the 7:29 mark as Chris Unterstein buried one in the top left corner, unassisted. SHU battled back and cut to within 3-2 as junior Peter Greco (Hamburg, NY) made a perfect feed to a cutting Matt Robideau (Massena, NY) who took a step and fired to the left post and in to close the first quarter.
The Pioneers kept the pressure on in the opening six minutes of the second quarter, pulling even at the 12 minute mark. Senior Kiel Adams (Rome, NY) notched a man-up goal off a feed from fellow senior Jim Hinkson (Whitby, Ontario). Hofstra answered a minute later as the Pride forced an errant pass on a SHU clear and Athan Iannucci took a pass in front and buried it.
SHU fought their way back to 4-4 just 24 seconds later as sophomore Billy Fuchs (Merrick, NY) sliced his way through the Hofstra defense for an unassisted tally. The Pride jumped back in front at 9:50 as Mike Colleluori picked up a loose ball and scored. The Pioneers answered once again, this time just 14 second later when freshman Bobby Karl (Clifton Park, NY) scored on a break away after a failed Pride clear to knot the game at 5-5.
Karl's goal at the 9:26 mark was the last of SHU's offensive output of the half as the Pioneer offense was held in check, not managing a shot over the last nine minutes of the half. Hofstra on the other hand, saw their offense explode, rattling off five-straight scores , started with a pair of man-up goals from Iannucci and Unterstein to take a 10-5 lead into the break. The Pride dominated the quarter offensively, out shooting SHU 20-9 and forcing 10 turnovers.
The third quarter brought more of the same for the Pride as they rattled off another four-straight on a pair of markers each from Dooley and Iannucci. The Pride held the shot edge again, 14-5 in the period and it was until 2:49 that the Pioneers finally broke through on offense. Freshman Nicholas Russo (Lindenhurst, NY) scored unassisted to stop the run and Fuchs fired one home off a feed from Robideau with 48 ticks left to end the quarter down 14-7.
The Pride ended any hopes of a Sacred Heart comeback by burying two scores within 13 seconds of the fourth quarter getting underway. Dooley notched his fifth off the opening face-off seven seconds in and then Iannucci came up with his sixth just six seconds later, again off the face-off, to put the Pride up 16-7. Hofstra tacked on five more in the fourth to produce the final 19-8 score.
SHU's Fuchs finished with three goals while Robideau had a goal and two assists. Senior Thomas Hind (Farmingdale, NY) made 12 saves in goal.
Dooley finished with six goals and an assist while Iannucci added six of his own. Unterstein scored three and assisted on three others for the Pride.
The Pioneers are back home this Saturday, April 8th, when they host the Fightin' Blue Hens of the University of Delaware in CAA action. Face-off is slated for 1 pm on Campus Field.
