SHU Falls Short Against Hofstra, 10-8, in CAA Lacrosse Match-Up

FAIRFIELD, CT (April 11, 2007) - The Sacred Heart Pioneers got two goals apiece from Peter Greco (Hamburg, NY) and Tony Tanzi (Mahopac, NY) but came up short as the Hofstra Pride scored five first quarter goals and converted four-of-seven man-up opportunities to come away with a 10-8 Colonial Athletic Association win Wednesday afternoon on Campus Field. The Pioneers drop their third-straight CAA contest falling to 1-3 in the league with two to play.

Hofstra (4-5, 2-3 CAA) used a big first quarter, scoring five times on 12 shots while winning six of the nine face-offs. The Pioneers scored first as sophomore Bobby Rushton (West Islip, NY) buried one at 8:58, unassisted. The Pride answered with four-straight in the span of three and a half minutes. Junior Mike Unterstein started the run unassisted at 7:44 followed by his brother, fellow junior Kevin Unterstein, unassisted, off the face-off 13 seconds later.

The Pride rally continued at 6:47 as Ryan Miller scored the third-straight unassisted goal. Sophomore Mike Colleluori posted the first of his game-high three goals at 4:11, burring a pass from Mike Unterstein, man-up. SHU ended the run with sophomore Bobby Karl (Clifton Park, NY) setting up Greco for his 11th goal of the season. Tom Interlicchio gave the Pride a 5-2 lead at 2:12 with an unassisted score but SHU answered just before the end of the quarter, on Evan Morgan's (Ashburn, VA) marker from Tanzi.

The two teams traded goals throughout the second quarter with Unterstein and Zachary Heyl netting goals for Hofstra and Tanzi and senior Michael Collins (Auburn, NY) scoring for the Pioneers as the Pride led 7-4 at the break. Hofstra's Colleluori mad it 8-5 at 12:52 of the third quarter, scoring off a feed from Miller. SHU posted back to back goals at 6:28 and 5:40 to pull within one, 8-7. Greco buried a feed from Morgan for his 12th of the year while Tanzi answered with his 10th of the season off a pass from Karl, his second helper of the afternoon.

Hofstra closed out the quarter with their third man-up goal of the afternoon with just 26 seconds left. Sophomore Tom Dooley hit a pass from Unterstein, his third assist and second on man-up opportunities. The Pioneers opened the fourth man-up and wasted little time in getting on board, scoring 10 seconds in on a great individual effort by senior Rory Morse (E. Falmouth, MA) to pull SHU to within 9-8.

The Pride buried their fourth man-up goal at 10:37 on Colleluori's third marker to go up 10-8 and let the Hofstra defense take over. The Pride limited SHU to just four shots in the fourth, forcing the Pioneers into five turnovers and two failed clear attempts. Mike Unterstein posted two goals and three assists in to lead the Pride. Danny Orlando made eight saves in goal to earn the win. Vinny D'Angelo won 10 of 17 face-offs picking up seven grounders in the win.

Sacred Heart (2-6, 1-3 CAA) got 15 saves from junior Ricardo Vargas (Falls Church, VA) in goal.

The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Quinnipiac for a 1:00 pm start.
