Sacred Heart Men's Lacrosse Loses to Delaware, 13-8, in final CAA Contest

FAIRFIELD, CT (April 24, 2004) - University of Delaware junior Andy Hipple scored four times to give the Fightin' Blue Hens a 13-8 win over Sacred Heart University in men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon in Fairfield, CT. With today's loss the Pioneers fall to 1-11 on the year and 1-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association while falling out of post season tournament consideration. Delaware can earn a berth in the in the tournament with a Drexel loss at Towson tonight.

Delaware struck first on Hipple's first tally of the game but the Pioneers answered back with three in the first quarter to hold a 3-1 advantage after the first 15 minutes of play. Sophomore Matthew Robideau (Massena, NY) and freshman Jonathan Corto (Orchard Park, NY) and Peter Greco (Hamburg, NY) all found the back of the net in the quarter for SHU.

Hipple struck again at the start of the second quarter, notching his second goal with13:55 on the clock that led the Fightin' Blue Hens on a 4-0 run as the Pioneer offense ran cold. Joe Trentzsch followed Hipple with his first of the day at 8:26 to tie it at 3-3. Senior Matt Alrich gave UD a lead they would never relinquish with 2:46 on the clock followed by freshman Alex Smith who won the ensuing face-off and scored unassisted just six second later for a 5-3 lead at the half.

Delaware ran their lead to 7-3 in the first three minutes of the third quarter on Hipple's third goal and Bob Meunier's first. SHU finally broke through with nine minuets left as Robideau scored his team-leading 20th goal, unassisted. Sacred Heart cut the lead to 7-5 just thirty seconds later as senior Jorge Bravo (Long Beach, NY) converted a feed from sophomore Adam Dzedzy (Glenmoore, PA). Hipple once again had an answer for Delaware, nailing his fourth of the day with just over four minutes to go in the quarter followed by two more Blue Hen scores to go up, 10-5. Three more UD tallies at the start of the fourth quarter put the Blue Hens up 13-6 and put the game out of reach.

Robideau and Bravo each scored twice for the Pioneers while Dzedzy picked-up three assists in the losing effort. Sophomore Thomas Hind (Farmingdale, NY) made 11 saves in the cage for Sacred Heart. Sophomore Chad Clark (Camillus, NY) picked-up a team-high seven ground balls.

For Delaware, now 9-5 overall and 2-3 in the league, Alrich joined Hipple as the Blue Hen's multiple goal scorers with two. Freshman Cam Howard and Trentzsch finished with a goal and two assists apiece while Meunier had a goal and an assist. Smith won 19-of-24 face-offs while also picking up 14 ground balls. In goal, Chris Collins made 11 saves to earn his ninth win on the year.

SHU will travel to Marist College on Wednesday night to face the Red Foxes in their final road game of the 2004 season.
