Pioneers Host Colgate in Season Opener... The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team will kick-off the 2006 season Saturday afternoon when they face-off with Colgate on Campus Field. The Pioneers and Raiders renew aquaintances after facing each other to open last season. Colgate has already had a chance to get their 2006 campaign underway, beating Hartford 11-7 at home last Saturday.

The Series... Colgate leads the all-time series, 2-1. The Raiders dropped the Pioneers in overtime, 8-7, at home last season and won 10-7 on Campus Field in 2004. SHU took the first-ever meeting between the two schools, 9-6, in Hamilton, N.Y. in 2003.

Up Next... The Pioneers open 2006 with a two-game homestand that continues next Saturday, March 4th against Manhattan. Face-off is scheduled for 12 pm.

Last Meeting with Colgate... Sacred Heart dropped their 2005 season opener, falling 8-7 in overtime at Colgate University on February 26th. The game was knotted a 2-2 after one quarter but the Pioneers were able to take command in the second, piling up three scores while holding Colgate scoreless. Kiel Adams gave SHU a commanding 6-2 lead on his second goal 58 seconds into the third quarter but the Red Raiders began their climb back. Raider Robert Trasolini scored his first goal of the day at the 11:30 mark of the third and opened the final quarter with his second 53 seconds in. He came back with his third a minute later to pull his team to within 6-5. The Pioneers answered on Matthew Robideau's first of the season but that would be all for the Sacred Heart offense as Colgate came up with the final three scores of the day. Colgate's Matt Lalli and Rob Ryan hooked up twice on scoring chances in the final minutes to pull the Raiders even and force overtime. And with 2:12 to go in the extra session, Ried Diamond ended it with an unassisted goal for the final 8-7 result.

Scouting the Raiders... The Colgate Raiders opened their season last weekend with an 11-7 win over Hartford at home. Sophomore Matt Lalli led the way with four goals and an assist while junior Rob Ryan picked a pair of scores and assists. Freshman Brandon Corp tallied a pair himself in his collegiate debut. Senior Andrew Jarolimek played all 60 minutes in goal and made six saves in earning the win. The Raiders were picked fifth in the Patriot League preseason poll. SHU Last Time Out... The Pioneers open the 2006 season this afternoon. SHU played a pair of preseason games at Albany and UMBC.

2006 Pioneer Captains... Seniors Matt Robideau, Thomas Hind, Kiel Adams and Chad Clark will serve as team captains for the 2006 season. Adams led the team with 22 goals in his first season with the Pioneers last year. The senior finished with 31 points and five man-up goals. Robideau scored 19 goals and passed out 14 assists to lead the team in scoring for the second-straight year with 33 points. Hind finished 2005 with a 6-8 overall record, posting a 11.55 goals against average with 122 saves. Clarke Started 13 of the 14 games on defense and picked-up 41 ground balls on the year, third on the team.

Four All-CAA Players Return for 2006... Seniors Matt Robideau and Kiel Adams were named to the All-Colonial Athletic Association First Team as juniors while sophomores Tony Tanzi and Billy Fuchs return after earning spots on the CAA All-Rookie team. Robideau and Adams had a combined 64 points (41 goals, 23 assists) in 2005. Tanzi scored nine goals and four assists in 14 games last season and had 28 ground balls. Fuchs was fourth on the team with 14 goals and five assists for 19 points.

Dzedzy and Greco Also Back in the Lineup... Also returning to the field this season is senior Adam Dzedzy and junior Peter Greco, both integral pieces to the SHU offense. Dzedzy had five goals and five assists despite battling injuries all last season. Greco was the Pioneer's third leading scorer in 2005, scoring 17 goals and handing out 11 assists. He lead the team with six man-up goals.

Hind Back to Man the Cage... Senior Thomas Hind has started every game in goal for the Pioneers heading into this season and owns a 10.53 career goals-against average with 444 saves.

Solid Offense... The Pioneers bring back their top-five scorers from last season where they were second in the CAA in goals per game (10.14), assists (5.79) and man-up scoring percentage (.329).

Lukowski and Reardon Join Coaching Staff... Chris Lukowski and Blake Reardon join the Pioneer coaching staff for 2006. Lukowski comes to SHU after a four-year stint as the head coach at Wagner College. Lukowski, a 1999 SHU grad, will work with the Pioneer offense. Reardon joins the staff after a stellar playing career for the Pioneers. He was SHU's main face-off man the past two years, winning 286 of 583 (.491). Both join Robb Chambers, a five-year member of Coach Mariano's staff. Chambers handles defensive coordinator duties as well as goalie coach.

Pioneer History... This is the 16th season of men's lacrosse at Sacred Heart. The Pioneers post a mark of 100-104 (.490) in their 16 year history. Head Coach Tom Mariano is the program's longest tenured coach in his 10th season at the helm. SHU begins it's fifth season of competition in the Colonial Athletic Association, one of the premier lacrosse leagues in the NCAA. Prior to joining the league, the Pioneers spent two seasons competing in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
