Pioneer Men's Lacrosse Starts 2005 at Colgate

FAIRFIELD, CT (February 24, 2005) - The 2005 version of the Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team will take the field for the first time this Saturday afternoon when they battle the Colgate Red Raiders at 1:00 pm. The Pioneers welcome back 29 letterwinners and seven starters from last year's team as they launch into the 2005 campaign with five-straight on the road before the first of six home games on March 22nd.

The Pioneers return their top-scorer from last year's 3-11 squad in junior captain Matthew Robideau (Massena, NY). Robideau leads the midfield after scoring 21 goals with seven assists in 2004. Robideau converted 35 shots on goal into 21 goals, a 51.5% shot-on-goal percentage. He also picked up 27 ground balls on the year.

Joining Robideau in the midfield are seniors Dana White (Gorham, ME), Thomas Latronica (West Islip, NY) and Blake Reardon (St. Michael, MN) as well as freshman newcomers Ryan Heath (Baldwinsville, NY), Tony Tanzi (Mahopac, NY) and Kevin Walker (Rochester, NY). White tallied five points in 14 games on three goals and three assists last year. Reardon returns as the Pioneers top face-off man, winning 116 of 269 a year ago.

SHU brings back some experience to the attack this season in junior Adam Dzezdy (Glenmoore, PA), sophomore Peter Greco (Hamburg, NY) and senior Christian Lynch (Northport, NY). Dzezdy scored eight goals and passed out a team-leading 16 assists in 2004 ending the year third on the team in scoring. Greco returns after a successful freshman campaign that saw him score 11 goals with seven assists while starting 11 of 14 games. Lynch was right behind him with 12 goals and two assists. Junior Kiel Adams (Rome, NY) and freshman Kienan Carney (Yorktown Heights, NY) add strength to the SHU attack to start the year.

Junior captain Thomas Hind (Farmingdale, NY) returns for his third season in the cage anchoring the Pioneer defense. Hind has played every minute in goal last season and has started every game in his two years at Sacred Heart. He posted an 11.19 goals against average last season with 163 saves in 852:28 minutes.

Hind will direct a defensive unit that features the return of juniors Chad Clark (Camillus, NY) and Mike Killeen (Commack, NY) and sophomores Chase Caurso (Huntington, NY) and Phil Gardner (Syracuse, NY). Caruso scored three goals last season while collecting 20 ground balls, earning SHU's Rookie of the Year award. Clark picked up 41 ground balls last season.

The Pioneers play a challenging slate of games in 2005 starting Saturday afternoon and continuing over Spring Break on their annual Florida trip. After taking on the Red Raiders, SHU will face the Fairfield Stags, Robert Morris Colonials and Manhattan Jaspers from March 6th through 13th in Florida. The Pioneers open the home portion of the schedule on March 22nd hosting Massachusetts and open play in the ultra-competitive Colonial Athletic Conference on April 2nd at Delaware. The Pioneers also travel to Towson and will host Hofstra, Drexel and Villanova to round out league play.
