Fairfield, Conn. - Coming off back-to-back 2-1 come from behind victories, the Sacred Heart University men's soccer team faces Adelphi in its first road contest of the 2010 season. The Pioneers' game against the Panthers kicks off at 7:00 pm on Saturday. It is the first of four straight games away from Campus Field for SHU.
The Pioneers are 3-0, their best start since transitioning to Division I in 1999. In the first week of the season, Sacred Heart shutout Holy Cross, 1-0 on opening night, followed by wins over Columbia and Siena.
Through three games, sophomore defender Marcello Castro (Panana, Brazil) leads the team with two goals and an assist for five total points. Classmate Justin Brewer (Somers, Conn.) leads the team in assists after collecting helpers in each of the first two games. In net, junior goalkeeper Alex Fait (Ottawa, Ont.) owns a 0.63 goals against average and a .857 save percentage.
Tomorrow night the Pioneers face their first road test of the season. Adelphi enters the game with an early season record of 2-1. The Panthers suffered their first loss of the season, 1-0 against Marist, at home on Thursday. Last year Sacred Heart fell to Adelphi 3-0 on Campus Field. Senior Michael Aquino, assisted by sophomore Issa Tall, posted the game winning score in the 59th minute. Tall registered two goals of his own in the final 30 minutes.
On Tuesday, September 15, SHU heads to Providence for a 3:00 pm contest. In last season's opening game the Friars topped the Pioneers 1-0 in double overtime. Tim Ritter fired a long range shot into the top side netting with just 1:47 left in the second extra frame to give PC the victory.
