Pioneers Face Iona in Final Tune-Up Before NEC Competition

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Sacred Heart men's soccer team heads to Iona this afternoon for its final non-conference contest before regular season Northeast Conference play begins.  Today's game between the Pioneers and the Gaels kicks off at 3:00 pm.

About The Pioneers... Sacred Heart enters the game 4-2, having dropped its last two decision, on the season and 1-2 on the road.  The Pioneers are currently ranked fourth in the NSCAA/hendrickcars.com North Atlantic Region.  Sophomore defender Marcello Castro (Panana, Brazil) leads the team in scoring with three goals, matching his season total from 2009, and one assist to total seven points.  On the frontline, sophomore forward Justin Brewer (Somers, Conn.) has tallied one score and collected a pair of assists.  In net, junioer goalkeeper Alex Fait (Ottawa, Ont.) owns a 1.25 goals against average and has totaled 22 saves on the season.

Scouting the Gaels... Iona, ranked third in the NSCAA/hendrickcars.com North Atlantic Region, come in this afternoon's game 2-2-1 overall.  On Saturday, the Gaels defeated Kentucky, in Columbia, S.C., 2-1 in overtime.  Sophomore midfielder Douglas Stephens posted the game winner in the 94th minute.  Stephens leads the team with a trifecta of goals on the season.  Freshman forward Samuel Adjei has recorded two goals and an assist trough the first five games.   Sophomore netminder Jesse Fullerton has started all five games and registered 24 saves.

Last Time They Met... Last season Iona escaped Fairfield with a 1-0 victory over SHU.  Giovani Destasio scored the game's lone goal on a first half penalty kick.  Norman Baer came within inches of knotting the game at one midway through the second with a shot that rang off the post.  Fait put forth a four save effort for the Pioneers.

Up Next... Sacred Heart hosts Long Island on Friday October 1 at 6:00 pm to kick-off the start of Northeast Conference play.  The Pioneers stay at home for their following game as St. Francis (NY) visits Campus Field for a 12:00 noon showdown on Sunday October 3.
