NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Sacred Heart entered this afternoon's game ranked fourth in the NSCAA/hendrickcars.com North Atlantic Region, while they visited fourth ranked Iona College for a 3:00 pm contest. The Pioneer men's soccer team held on for a 2-1 victory to improve to 5-2 on the season, while the Gaels fell to 2-3-1.
Sophomore midfielder Edwin Victor (Bridgeport, Conn.) broke the ice in the 54th minute with a score to put SHU up 1-0. For Victor, it was his first goal of the season that was a strike taken from 35 yards out and sailed over the Iona goalkeeper.
The Pioneers presented the Gaels with a prime opportunity to tie the game when Sacred Heart committed a foul inside the penalty box. Freshman striker Victor Munoz took the ensuing penalty kick, but was denied by SHU junior goalkeeper Alex Fait (Ottawa, Ont.)
In the 64th minute, Pioneer sophomore defender Marcello Castro (Parana, Brazil) fired a shot that was turned away by Iona sophomore netminder Jesse Fullerton. Just over a minute later, at the 64:20 mark, sophomore Brian Francolini (Ellington, Conn.), from Patrick Daka (Chingola, Zambia), put SHU up by two with his second goal of the season.
Gael sophomore midfielder Douglas Stephens fired a shot that was blocked, in the 70th minute, and followed up with a second shot, at the 70:12 mark, to beat Fait and cut the lead in half.
Iona got of 25 shots for the game, compared to only 11 taken by the Pioneers. However, only six shots by the Gaels were on net, which translated into five saves for Fait. In net for Iona, Fullerton stopped four shots.
After an eight day layoff the Pioneers are back in action on Friday October 1 at 6:00 pm when they host Long Island for the first Northeast Conference match-up of the season.
