FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sophomores Marcello Castro and Edwin Victor of the Sacred Heart men's soccer team were named to the 2010 National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-North Atlantic Region team on Wednesday.
Castro, a central defender from Parana, Brazil, was honored as a member of the NSCAA/Performance Subaru First Team. This season Castro led the Pioneers with 12 points on a team-high five goals and two assists. As a freshman he played primarily at center midfield, but made the transition to the backline this season. For his efforts he was honored by the Northeast Conference as the league's defensive player of the year as well as a member of its all-conference first team.
Victor, a center midfielder from Bridgeport, Conn., was a NSCAA Third Team selection. He notched one goal and one assist this season for SHU, but was counted on as a key defensive and transitional player in the Pioneer midfield. Victor was also named to the NEC second team.
This season the Sacred Heart men's soccer team experienced its most successful season at the Division I level. The Pioneers posted a record of 11-6-2, the most wins for SHU in D-I, and were seeded second in the NEC playoffs.
Head coach Joe Barroso was named the conference's coach of the year. With that he became the first coach in league history to be honored as coach of the year for both a men's and women's team in his career. It was the third time he led the Sacred Heart men's team to the postseason.
