FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart University men's soccer coach Joe Barroso has announced the Pioneers 18-game schedule for the 2011 fall season. SHU opens the season with a home contest against St. Peter's under the lights at Campus Field on September 1 at 7:00 pm.
Following the season opener, the Pioneers hit the road for four straight road games, beginning with a 3:00 pm tilt against Columbia on September 4. After that, Sacred Heart visits Holy Cross, Providence, and Stony Brook on September 6, 10, and 16.
The Pioneers return home for a pair of non-conference games against NJIT, during the SHU Homecoming Weekend, and Hartford on September 24 and 27, before beginning Northeast Conference play.
NEC competition gets underway when Sacred Heart travels to Western Pennsylvania to take on Robert Morris on September 30 and Saint Francis (PA) on October 2. The Pioneers look to build on a successful 2010 campaign where they went 11-6-2 overall and 6-2-2, good enough for second place, in the NEC.
SHU continues league play with a match-up against Long Island on the road on October 7, then hosts Fairleigh Dickinson for its first home NEC game of the year at 3:00 pm on October 9. The contest against FDU is the first of five straight home games, four of which will come against league opponents.
The Pioneers have a big weekend scheduled in the middle of October as they host Mount St. Mary's at 7:30 Friday October 14 and two-time defending NEC champion Monmouth at 1:00 pm on October 16. Last season, Sacred Heart escaped the Mount with a 1-0 victory, before earning a scoreless tie at #10 Monmouth, the second straight season that SHU tied a ranked Hawks team.
The five-game home stand concludes with two games against intrastate rivals. Yale comes to Campus Field to play under the lights at 8:00 pm on October 19 for a non-conference match-up, followed by a NEC game against Central Connecticut State at noon on October 23.
Sacred Heart continues league play with a road contest at St. Francis (NY) on October 30, followed by the final home game of the season against Quinnipiac at 7:00 pm on November 4. The regular season wraps up with a road game at Bryant on November 6 at 1:00 pm.
The Northeast Conference Tournament, to be hosted by the regular season champion, is slated for November 11 and 13.
