WORCESTER, Mass. – In last season's opener, Marcello Castro (Parana, Brazil) netted the only goal in a 1-0 win for the Sacred Heart University men's soccer team against Holy Cross. Castro, a junior captain and defender, did it again as he found the back of the net 12:54 into the contest. With the win, the Pioneers improved to 2-1, while the Crusaders dropped to 0-2-1.
Junior forward Brian Francolini (Ellington, Conn.) recorded a point in his second straight game as he assisted on Castro's goal. Francolini played a corner kick into the box for Castro, who buried a straight shot into the right side of the net.
Senior netminder Alex Fait (Ottawa, Ont.) earned his second shutout with a season-high six saves. For Holy Cross, freshman Michael Thompson equaled Fait's outing with six saves, but allowed one goal to take the loss. Despite the loss, the Crusaders outshot the Pioneers 13-11.
Sacred Heart remains on the road for game three out of four away from Campus Field as it visits Providence for a 1:00 pm match-up, Saturday afternoon.
