(Brooklyn, NY ) – Marcello Castro (Parana, Brazil) scored in the 67th minute on a penalty kick, forcing a 1-1 tie for the Sacred Heart Pioneers against the Long Island Blackbirds Friday afternoon.
Castro made good on an opportunity after being fouled in front of the net, scoring his team-leading third goal of the year. It put the Pioneers in position to come out with a win, as LIU played a man down for the final 13 minutes of regulation and both overtimes after Dan Sauerhoff received a second yellow card.
However, it was the Blackbirds who generated the best chance to win the game late. Alex Fait (Ottawa, ON) made a dead-on save on a drive by Steve Jakubowski in the final minute of regulation to preserve the tie.
LIU scored its lone goal early, when Rommel Forde drove a shot past Fait after receiving a pass from Josh Maley on the right just outside the box.
The Pioneers' record moves to 5-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in NEC play. SHU hosts Fairleigh Dickenson Sunday, October 9 at 3:00 p.m.
