Men's Soccer Beats NEC Rival Monmouth 1-0 on Castro's Penalty Kick
(Fairfield, CT) – Marcello Castro (Panana, Brazil) scored the game's only goal on a penalty kick late in the second half, as the Sacred Heart University men's Soccer team defeated the Monmouth Hawks in a big NEC win Sunday afternoon at Campus Field.
Justin Brewer (Somers, CT) earned the chance for Castro by streaking past Monmouth defender Matt Jeffery, who tripped him in the box. Jeffery was given a yellow card, and Castro followed by drilling the penalty kick to the right of goalkeeper Alex Blackburn in the 70th minute for the game-winner.
Monmouth appeared to score the game's first goal, but Alex Weidman's boot to the back of the net off a cross from 30 yards out by Ryan Clark was disallowed on an offsides cal in the 24th minute.
Alex Fait (Ottawa, ON) helped limit Monmouth to just one shot on goal, intercepting several crosses by the Hawks throughout the game, en route to his sixth shutout of the season. His biggest came on a corner by Clark with 30 seconds remaining in the game, a leaping grab with several Hawks going hard to the net.
The Pioneers tied the perennial NEC powerhouse Hawks the past two years. With the win, the Pioneers improve to 3-1-2 in NEC play and 7-4-2 overall. Sacred Heart hosts Yale Wednesday, October 19 at 8:00 p.m.
