(Fairfield, CT) – The Sacred Heart University men's soccer team, defending regular season champions of the Northeast Conference, has released its upcoming 2012 season schedule.
He Pioneers open the season at St. Peter's on Aug. 30. SHU then hosts its first home games of the season at Campus Field, beginning with Columbia on Sept. 2, followed by Holy Cross on Sept. 5. After a clash at NJIT on Sept 12, Sacred Heart will take on local rival Yale on Sept. 16 in New Haven. The Pioneers host Stony Brook on Sept 19, then close out the non-conference portion of their schedule against another in-state opponent when they travel to Hartford on Sept. 22.
Sacred Heart begins its quest to repeat as NEC regular season champions at home against Robert Morris on Sept. 28, followed two days later by another home match against St. Francis (PA). The Pioneers travel to Hamden to take on Quinnipiac on Oct. 5, and then are on the road against Fairleigh Dickenson on Oct. 12. SHU hosts LIU Brooklyn on Oct. 14 and Bryant on Oct. 19, then plays its final in-state match of the year in New Britain against CCSU on Oct. 21. The Pioneers will play their final regular season home match in Oct. 28 against St. Francis (NY), then close out the regular season on the road with contests at Mount St. Mary's on Nov. 2 and Monmouth on Nov. 4.
The Northeast Conference Tournament, to be hosted by the regular season champion, is slated for November 9 and 11.
The Pioneers return reigning NEC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the year Marcello Castro (Panana, Brazil), a senior back who led the team with six goals and was second with 13 points last season.
