Men's Soccer Knocked Down by Stony Brook 2-1
(Fairfield, CT) - The Stony Brook Seawolves won their fourth straight game, taking a 2-1 match against the Sacred heart Pioneer Men's Soccer team Wednesday afternoon at Campus Field.
The Seawolves broke a 1-1 tie to take the lead for good in the 68th minute on a goal by Leonardo Fernandes. He won a battle for possession with Marcello Castro (Panana, Brazil) low in the box after a pass in by Alejandro Fritz, then fired inside the left post for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Stony Brook stormed out to a 1-0 lead with a goal by Martin Giordano in the first minute of play. He redirected a free kick by Kyle Schlesinger from about 30 yards out with a header from inside the box for a 1-0 lead about 26 seconds into the contest.
After being held scoreless in the first half, despite a couple of opportunities, Castro tied it for SHU moments into the second half. He drove a free kick in from the left side about 20 yards out for his team-leading third goal. In the first half, Castro nearly tied it twice, driving a free kick from about 40 yards out just wide of the near-side post in the 36th minute, and also barley missed high on a header off a free kick by Alex Danais (South Windsor, CT) in the 40th minute.
Daniel Nicinski (Brooklyn, NY) played the first half in goal for SHU, making a couple big stops after the Seawolves opening minute goal. In the 40th minute, moments before Castro's near miss, he made his best stop on Raphael Abreu on a right-wing shot streaking in from near midfield. The Seawolves also just missed a second goal in the 36th minute, moments after Castro's wide free kick, on a header by Fritz off a cross that sailed barley high.
The Pioneers return to action Saturday night on the road at Harford at 7:00 pm.
