Castro Wins Third Consecutive NEC Player of the Year; Named to All-NEC First Team

(Fairfield, CT) – For the third consecutive season, Marcello Castro (panama, Brazil) was named Men's Soccer Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Year, as well as a member of the All-NEC First Team.

The senior back led the Pioneers for the fourth straight year in goals, scoring a career high nine this year to place him second in the NEC this season.   He finished with 20 points, good for third in the conference. Castro ends his brilliant career with 23 goals, earning him fifth on the all-time SHU list.  His 23 career goals are third most at the Division I level for SHU, even more impressive considering he plays defense.

Castro was also selected to play in the New England Intercollegiate Soccer League All Star Game.  The NEISL All-Star Game features the best men's soccer players in New England at the Division I, II, and III levels.  Castro will represent Sacred Heart in the Division I game on November, 25 at Harvard University beginning at 1:00 pm.

Castro's production improved every season in his four years as a Pioneer.  He scored three as a freshman, five as a sophomore, six as a junior, and nine in this his senior season.  His 51 career points place him seventh on the all-time SHU list. Beyond the numbers, however, his physical game-changing defense earned him the distinction as the only three-time NEC Defensive Player of Year in the history of the conference.
