Sacred Heart's Castro Drafted by Colorado Rapids of MLS

2013 MLS Supplemental Draft Results Official Release

FAIRFIELD, CT (January 22, 2012) - Sacred Heart senior Marcello Castro (Panana, Brazil) was selected be the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer in the MLS Supplemental Draft held on Tuesday afternoon.  Castro becomes the first player in Sacred Heart men's soccer history to be drafted in the MLS.

"I am extremely happy for Marcello who has given so much to Sacred Heart University," stated head coach Joe Barroso.  "It is very well deserved and he is ready to play at the next level.  He has given so much to our program for the last four years, we wish him a tremendous amount of success in the MLS."

Castro was taken in the fourth round of Tuesday's supplemental draft, with Colorado Rapids using the 63rd overall pick to select the 6-3 defender/midfielder.  The Supplemental draft is a continuation of the MLS Super Draft, consisting of four more rounds.  The Rapids other Supplemental Draft Picks were midfielder Stefano Pinho (Fluminese in Brazil), defender Brenton Griffiths (South Florida), and midfielder Michael David (UC-Santa Barbara).

Castro is coming off a senior season where he was named to the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Men's All-America Team for the second time in his career, earning Third Team honors on defense.  The senior back led the Pioneers for the fourth straight year in goals, scoring a career high nine this season to place him second in the NEC. He finished with 20 points, good for third in the conference.  Castro finished out his career earning NEC Defensive Player of the Year honors for a third-consecutive season.

He ends his brilliant career with 23 goals, earning him fifth on the all-time SHU list. His 23 career goals are third most at the Division I level for SHU, even more impressive considering he plays defense.

Another notable player taken in the fourth round of the MLS draft was San Jose's goal machine Chris Wondolowski, who won the MLS Golden Boot in 2010 and 2012.  Wondolowski was taken in the fourth round of the Supplemental Draft in 2005.

The Rapids were founded in 1996, as part of the ten charter members of the MLS. They won their only MLS Cup in 2012, made the finals in 1997. They play their home games at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado (8 miles north of Denver).
