The Sacred Heart men's soccer team swept the Northeast Conference weekly awards for their strong play to close out the season. Senior forward Shauquille Saunchez earned Player of the Week and freshman goalkeeper Robert Strain earned Rookie of the Week. The Pioneers clinched their first NEC Tournament berth since 2011 with their 2-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday afternoon.
Saunchez netted two first half goals to give SHU the 2-0 victory over FDU and helped secure the Pioneers in their first NEC tournament berth since 2011. Saunchez scored his first goal in the 35th minute after receiving a long ball just past midfield and dribbling past the goalkeeper. He struck again just eight minutes as he played a lead pass from Dylan Santos to the far corner of the net for his eight goal of the season. Saunchez ranks third in the NEC in goals and fourth in points with 17 on the season.
Strain was the standout rookie for the final week of the regular season, he allowed just one goal with eight combined saves against Columbia and Fairleigh Dickinson. He picked up a shut out in the regular season finale against FDU with four saves to give SHU their first NEC Tournament spot since 2011. Strain made a spectacular diving stop in the 51st minute to hold the Knights.
The Pioneers will take on one-seed St. Francis Brooklyn on Friday November 11 at 3:00pm. Follow the action live on NEC Front Row.
