Pioneers Edged By Army West Point, 2-1

WEST POINT, N.Y.— A goal in the 67th minute gave Army West Point the 2-1 victory over the Sacred Heart men's soccer team on Tuesday night. The Pioneers (3-6) coming off a four-game homestand are still searching for the first road win of the season.

The Black Knights (6-3) were quick to open the scoring at Malek Stadium at Clinton Field a Roman Guiseppi chipped in the header just 2:43 into the game. Guiseppi picked up the goal off the Marcos Arroyo corner kick clear attempt by Pioneers sophomore goalkeeper Robert Strain. SHU answered in the 41st off the boot from senior defender Ezra Siyadhuba as he fired one off his left foot to the right side of the net to tie the game at 1-1. Army West Point was able to get the go-ahead goal in the 67th minute off the shot from Rex Epps as he played the feed from Tyler Mitchner. Reigning Northeast Conference player of the week Oscar Curras nearly tied things up for the Pioneers but his shot banked off the left post in the 80th minute. 

Army West Point outshot the Pioneers 15-12 on the night and held the corner kick edge, 7-3. Justin Stoll recorded three saves for the Black Knights while Strain tied a season-high of six saves for the fourth time this year.

The Pioneers will have the next couple days off before returning to the pitch on Tuesday, October 3 at Stony Brook for a 7:00 p.m. start.

 
First half

  • Junior Matheus Alves with the long boot from 25 yards out, but Stoll made the diving stop to the right side of the goal to set up the SHU corner kick at 13:32.
  • Epps had the huge breakaway in the 19th minute as he split the Pioneer defenders, but Strain was there to make the huge save.
  • Sophomore Riley Sullivan had the final scoring chance for SHU of the half get knocked down by Stoll in the 43rd minute.

Second Half

  • Siyadhuba fired the Pioneers first shot of the second half at 51:44. He picked up the Pioneers second shot of the half in the 71st minute.
  • Off the bounce from the corner kick clear, Curras nearly missed the goal from outside the box as his shot banks of the inside of the left post.
  • SHU & Army West Point split the half with five shots apiece.
