New Rochelle, NY - The teams exchanged goals in a seven minute span in the first half as Iona and Sacred Heart played to a 1-1 draw in men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon.
Iona played with a man advantage for much of the game after Sacred Heart freshman Nemanja Filimonovic (Belgrade, Serbia) drew a red card for serious hard contact on Iona's Nick Smaldone at the 20:40 mark of the first half. The Gaels took advantage soon after when Felipe Faundez found the back of the net in the 34th minute for a 1-0 lead. Smaldone and Chris Butler were credited with assists on the play.
Sacred Heart quickly answered in the 41st minute when Jesper Fredriksson (Gothenburg Sweden) took a throw in pass, shielded his defender, and blasted the ball past goalie Nils Binstock for the equalizer. Junior Ricarti Mendes (Campinas, Brazil) picked up the assist.
With the score tied, the Pioneers went on the defensive due to their one-man disadvantage. Neither team was able to create clean scoring chances as regulation time expired. The game held form through both overtime sessions, resulting in the 1-1 tie.
Binstock made three saves in net for Iona, while sophomore Matthew Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England) stopped four shots for Sacred Heart. The Gaels held a 19-9 advantage in shot attempts, and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. Smaldone had a game-high six shot attempts.
The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, September 9th when they host the University of Maine. Game time for the home opener at Campus Field is 12 noon.
