Green Bay, WI - Freshman Jason Tessitore (Ansonia, CT / Amity) scored in the 69th minute and the Sacred Heart Pioneers men's soccer team got the Joe Barosso era off to a big start with a 1-0 win over Bowling Green Saturday afternoon.
The win is Barosso's first as head coach of the men's soccer team at SHU, after coaching the Pioneers women's team for 8 seasons.
After a scoreless first half, the Pioneers got the game breaking goal when Tessitore took freshman Patrick Spanninger's (Horsham, PA / Chestnut Hill Academy) volley from 6 yards out and put it behind Bowling Green goalkeeper Paul Shoemaker to give the Pioneers the lead.
The Pioneers were out shot 17-12 by Bowling Green but Pioneers freshman goaltender Matthew Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England / Sandon) anchored a solid SHU defensive effort to preserve the victory.
In winning the season opener, the Pioneers have equaled their win total from the 2004 season, and they will try to continue to build on their momentum on Sunday when they are right back in action, facing the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. The game is set for a Noon start.
