Fairfield, CT - Senior Matt Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England) converted a penalty kick opportunity with 3:41 left in the second overtime to lift Sacred Heart over Maine, 2-1, in men's soccer action Friday at Campus Field. Junior Denis Brunote (Flintbek, Germany) scored the Pioneers other goal.
The winning goal was set-up when junior Jesper Fredriksson (Gothenburg, Sweden) was fouled on a rush late in the second-overtime. The big forward was taken down from behind in what appeared to be a clear path to the goal. The referee awarded the penalty kick opportunity and Jones walked up and nailed the ball into the right corner of the net, past goaltender Alex Pilitsis.
Both teams scored goals late in the first half. Maine struck first when Jake Ostrov took a pass from Jordan Antonucci, fought through a defender, and deposited a shot past Jones in the 32nd minute. Brunotte tied the game in the 44th minute with a line drive shot into the top of the goal from 20 yards out.
Following a well played regulation period, the game got physical in overtime, with a major scrum erupting in front of the Maine net in the 97th minute. Starting Black Bear goaltender Nemanja Kostic and SHU defender Matt Mones (Trumbull, CT) were both given red cards and ejected for their roll in the fight.
After a conservative first half, SHU put the offensive pressure on in the second stanza and overtime, outshooting Maine 12-4 after intermission. SHU held a 15-8 advantage in shots for the game.
The Pioneers are back in action Tuesday when they host Holy Cross. Game time at Campus Field is set for 4:00 pm.
