Providence, RI - The Providence College men's soccer team defeated Sacred Heart, 2-0, in men's soccer action on Thursday at PC's Glay Field in Providence. Friar forward Derek Nobrega scored both goals in the victory as the Friars remained undefeated on the season with a 2-0-1 mark.
The Friars dominated the first half and jumped out to a quick lead on Nobrega's first goal just 10:14 into the game. Freshman Timothy Ritter crossed the ball from the right side and Nobrega one-timed the shot past Sacred Heart goalkeeper Matthew Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England/Sandon). Providence added an insurance goal in the 35th minute when Nobrega headed sophomore Ryan Maduro's corner kick into the top right corner of the net.
The Pioneers got some offense going in the second half, led by senior Neal Shapiro (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) who had two shots. But Friar junior goalkeeper Chris Konopka was up to the task, making three saves to lock up his second shutout of the season.
Jones made seven saves in goal for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers, now 1-2 on the year, are back in action on Wednesday when they visit Holy Cross. Game time is 4:00 pm
