Sept. 11, 2007
WORCESTER, MA - Senior Brian Downs (Jefferson, NJ) scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute to lead the Sacred Heart men's soccer team to a 2-1 win at Holy Cross on a wet Tuesday evening.
Holy Cross, which suffered its first defeat of the season to drop to 2-1, opened the scoring just 8:12 into the game on an unassisted goal by Kyle Miller. The Crusaders would ride that goal into a 1-0 lead at the half. Holy Cross outshot the Pioneers in the period 6-2.
Sacred Heart, 3-2 and winners of two straight, got the game-tying goal 3:55 into the second half from Jesper Fredriksson (Gothenburg, Sweden) unassisted off a free kick. It was his third goal of the year.
Ricarti Mendes (Campinas, Brazil) set up the game-winner on a corner kick with 12:08 left to play in the game. The goal for Downs was his first collegiate score.
Sacred Heart outshot the Crusaders 5-3 in the second half, but Holy Cross won that battle 9-7 overall.
Junior Matt Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England) was forced to make just two saves to pick up the win in the net. Thomas Booth made four in the loss for Holy Cross.
The Pioneers will be in action again on Friday with a 2:30 game at the University of Vermont.
