Garden City, NY - The Adelphi Panthers scored three second half goals and outshout Sacred Heart 12-6 in the second half enroute to a 3-1 victory in men's soccer action Friday night. Sophomore Mario Mililli (Shelton, CT) scored the Pioneers only goal.
Both teams played even in the opening minutes until Mililli found some space 35 yards out and skipped a ball off the turf past the outstretched arms of Adelphi goal keeper Thorne Holder. Mililli's tally gave the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage heading into the half.
Just 4:56 into the second half of action the Panthers got the equalizer as Val Charalambous sent a free kick into the Pioneer box. Alexander Kouznetsov was able to get a head on the Charalambous strike and sent the ball past Matt Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England), knotting the game at one.
The Panthers kept the pressure on and it paid off at the 64 minute mark when Charalambous sent another ball across the Sacred Heart box. This time the ball found the foot of Stephen Fregosi, who sent the ball home, giving Adelphi a 2-1 lead.
Adelphi put the game out of reach in the 77th minute as Kemalie Preston played a ball through a Sacred Heart defense that was pushing up field. Figueiredo was able to run onto Preston's ball and found himself one-on-one with Jones and beat the Pioneer netminder for the score.
Holder made three saves in the win, while Jones picked up four. The Panthers out shot Sacred Heart 19-12.
The Pioneers are back in action Wednesday when they visit Iona. Game time is set for 3:00 pm.
