Loretto, PA - Sophomore defender Bryce Luetzen scored off a penalty kick in the 82nd minute, and the Saint Francis men's soccer team rallied for a 1-1 tie versus NEC rival Sacred Heart Sunday afternoon at the Stokes Athletics Field.
Luetzen's second goal of the season came after the Pioneers were called for a hand ball inside the 18-yard box. The Red Flash were awarded the penalty kick, and Luetzen beat goalkeeper Matthew Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England/Sandon) to his right side.
Saint Francis, which had 20 corner kicks to just two for Sacred Heart, couldn't capitalize on it's chances early in the match.
The Pioneers scratched and clawed, and freshman Jason Tessitore (Ansonia, CT/Amity) found a rebound from 15 yards out and deposited it in the right side of the goal to give the Pioneers the 1-0 lead. It was Tessitore's team leading fifth goal of the year.
The teams traded several scoring chances throughout as Saint Francis recorded 14 shots, and Sacred Heart had eight.
Senior Bobby Pipech stopped four shots for the Red Flash, as did Jones for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers finish their road trip Tuesday night when they visit Army. Game time is 7:00.
