Pioneers and Black Knights Settle For Tie
Oct. 11, 2005
Fairfield, CT - Each team scored a first half goal and the Sacred Heart Pioneers and Army Black Knights played to a 1-1 tie in a physical men's soccer contest Tuesday at Campus Field.
The Pioneers struck first when, 12 minutes in, freshman Jason Tessitore (Ansonia, CT/Amity) took a lob pass from senior Nick Loyd (Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) and chipped it into the net from 40 yards out. It was Tessitore's team leading sixth goal of the season.
The Black Knights would get even with about 10 minutes to go in the first half when sophomore Chase Spruill fed junior Adrian Moreno a pass that Moreno buried in the right corner of the net from 30 yards out for his team leading fourth goal of the year.
From there both teams battled back and forth for the next 65 minutes but neither could score. With five minutes left in regulation sophomore Chase Hunter had a golden opportunity for the Black Knights. He moved in all alone but Pioneer goalkeeper Matthew Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England/Sandon) came out to make a diving save and deny Hunter.
The Pioneers had a chance to end it in the first overtime when Tessitore fired a shot from just outside the box, but Army goaltender John Michael Gallogly just barely got his hands on the ball to push it wide.
The Black Knights ended up out shooting the Pioneer 21-14. Jones made five saves in goal for Sacred Heart while Gallogly also made five for Army.
The Pioneers, who have now tied two straight games, continue their homestand this weekend with a pair of Northeast Conference games. First up, they host Mount St. Mary's on Friday. Game time is 3:30 pm.
