Fairfield, CT - Patrick Daka (Chingola, Zambia) and Norman Baer (Marl, Germany) each scored a goal for the Sacred Heart men's soccer team in a 2-0 victory over Central Connecticut State Friday night at Campus Field. The Pioneers outshot an opponent for the first time this season as they move to 3-1-1 in the Northeast Conference. Alex Fait (Ottawa, Canada) recorded his sixth shutout of 2009 making three saves against the Blue Devils.
Sacred Heart (6-4-1, 3-1-1 NEC) got a lift early as Benjamin Pahlke (Lippstadt, Germany) made a defensive save to keep the Blue Devils off the board. The Pioneers just missed taking an early lead on a Brian Francolini (Ellington, CT) shot that floated just over the woodwork. Robert Cavener had a chance to give CCSU the early edge but his long range shot was knoced away by Fait. The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead with just 2:50 remaining in the opening half as Daka converted on a breakaway opportunity created by a Nemanja Filimonovic (Belgrade, Serbia) through ball.
Central Connecticut State (6-4-1, 1-2-1, NEC) had an opportunity to knot the game at one in the early stages of the second half. Raphael Guimaraes fired a shot from close range that was blocked by the SHU defense. Giancarlo Massaro (Woodbridge, CT) had a chance to extend the Pioneer lead with a goal of his own in the 56th minute but his shot rang off the crossbar. Sacred Heart would seal the game with 19:26 on the clock as Baer coverted on a diving header from a Lusiano Dadario (East Haven, CT) cross to beat the Blue Devil keeper.
The Pioneers continue this crucial weekend of NEC action as they welcome rival Quinnipiac to Campus Field Sunday afternoon. Game time is set for 2:30 pm.
