Fairfield, CT - The Sacred Heart men's soccer team fell to Northeast Conference rival Quinnipiac 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Campus Field. The weather played a major factor on a cold and rainy that limited the scoring chances for both sides. Pierre Soubrier notched the only goal of the contest with 14:37 to play in the second half converting on a penalty kick. Bobcat goalkeepr Frederick Hall made seven saves including five in the first half to lead Quinnipiac to the shutout victory.
Sacred Heart (6-5-1, 3-2-1 NEC) had the first opportunity to score with a rush into the QU penalty box 15 minutes into the opening stanza. Nemanja Filimonovic's (Belgrade, Serbia) header was turned away by Hall to keep the game scoreless early. The Bobcats nearly pulled ahead two minutes later as Shane Recklett let loose a blast that rang off the crossbar. Recklett would have another chance 12 minutes later but whiffed at point blank range trying to bang in a low cross. The Pioneers just missed scoring 4:30 before halftime as Norman Baer (Marl, Germany) put a header just over the goal frame after a cross from Mario Mililli (Shelton, CT)
Quinnipiac (7-1-5, 3-2-1 NEC) put early pressure on the Pioneers in the second half as Alex Fait (Ottawa, Canada) made two saves in the first four minutes to keep the score knotted at zero. Late in the second half the Bobcats got the break of the game, being awarded a free kick in the 76th minute. Soubrier blasted the penalty kick into the left side of the net to provide the 1-0 margin.
Jesper Fredriksson (Gothenburg, Sweeden) ripped a free kick from 45 yards out that Hall batted away and recovered the ball before SHU could get to the rebound. Sacred Heart would have one final crack at tying the game on a free kick just inches outside the Quinnipiac penalty box. The Pioneers would not be able to convert and fell for the first time in a home Northeast Conference game this season.
Sacred Heart returns to action October 21 as they travel to West Point, NY to take on the Black Knights of Army. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
