Fairfield, CT - Freshman Jesper Fredriksson (Gothenburg, Sweden) has been named the Brine/Northeast Conference Men's Soccer Player and Rookie of the Week for the week of September 11-17th. He is only the third dual Player/Rookie honoree in the last three seasons in the NEC.
Fredriksson, who is quickly becoming an offensive force, was unstoppable last week, scoring five goals as Sacred Heart won two-of-three matches to improve to 3-2-1 on the season. He tallied twice in Tuesday's 3-2 overtime triumph over Holy Cross, including the game-winner on a header off a cross from Jason Tessitore in the 97th minute. Fredriksson recorded the Pioneers' lone goal in a 2-1 double overtime setback to host Wisconsin-Green Bay in the opener of the Nike Soccer Classic on Friday, then added a pair of markers in a 3-1 win over Georgia State on Sunday. The native of Goethenburg, Sweden is now tied for the league lead with six goals and ranks fourth with 12 points.
The Pioneers (3-2-1) return to the pitch on Wednesday when they visit UConn. Game time in Storrs is 7:00 pm.
