Pioneers Top Central Connecticut, 2-1, in Key NEC Soccer Battle

Oct. 13, 2006

New Britain, CT - Sophomore Jason Tessitore (Ansonia, CT) scored the game winning goal in the 54th minute and junior Ricarti Mendes (Campinas, Brazil) added a goal and an assist as the Pioneers rallied to beat Central Connecticut, 2-1, in NEC men's soccer action Friday in New Britain.

The Blue Devils jumped on top late in the first half when Joey Viscardi scored his first goal, unassisted, at the 43:09 mark. The forward took off on a breakaway down the right side and fired the ball across the goal into the left corner for the first tally of the game.

The Pioneers responded less than two minutes later with the game-tying goal by Mendes. With just 10 seconds left in the half, Mendes collected a pass from Jesper Fredriksson (Gothenburg, Sweden) on the right side and shot from 18-yards out into the left corner of the goal. The game went into intermission tied, 1-1.

In the second half, Sacred Heart took the lead on Tessitore's goal at the 53:33 mark. Tessitore accepted a pass from Mendes on the right side and sailed the ball up and over CCSU goaltender Paul Armstrong.

The Blue Devils took seven shots in the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net. With just two seconds remaining in the game, senior Alex Harrison found an open shot on the right side that was just a bit too high as it skimmed the top left corner of the goal.

The Blue Devils and Pioneers both took 15 shots in the game. Armstrong made six saves on the day, four of which came in the first half. The match turned was a physical one with 25 fouls being called and three yellow cards issued.

The Pioneers visit Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 pm in another key NEC tilt.
