Fairfield, CT - Men's soccer freshman goaltender Matthew Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England / Sandon) was named the Enterprise Rent-A-Car/Sacred Heart Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of October 17-23rd.
Jones backstopped the Pioneers to two crucial wins over Northeast Conference opponents this week. Friday against St. Francis (NY) he made eight saves in preserving a 1-0 shutout. Against LIU on Sunday he made four saves for his second straight shutout. Jones now has five shutouts on the season and has allowed just four goals in his last six games, a streak in which the Pioneers are unbeaten, posting two wins and four ties. For the year, Jones has a 1.09 goals against average, and has allowed just 16 goals in playing in all 14 Pioneer games.
"He was outstanding in the two shut-outs and he has been just as great for us the entire year," head coach Joe Barroso said.
Jones has led the Pioneers to a 5-5-4 record overall and a 2-1-3 mark in the Northeast Conference, good for fourth place. The Pioneers play three straight home games to close the regular season beginning this Sunday against Fairleigh Dickinson. Game time at Campus Field is 1:00 pm.
