Men's Soccer Stays in NEC Playoff Hunt With 2-1 Win Over LIU

Fairfield, CT - Junior Filipe Celikkaya (Almada, Portugal) scored the game winning goal and the Sacred Heart men's soccer team kept its Northeast Conference playoff hopes alive with a 2-1 win over LIU Friday at Campus Field. The Pioneers can clinch a playoff berth with a win over St. Francis Sunday afternoon.
With their NEC playoff hopes hanging in the balance, the Pioneers came out hungry, out-shooting the Blackbird 14-6 for the game. Jason Tessitore (Orange, CT) put SHU up early on with a goal in the sixth minute. Denis Brunotte (Flintbek, Germany sent a nice lob pass across the field to Mario Millili (Shelton, CT) who fired the ball to a cutting Tessitore in the box. The senior re-directed the pass across the net, into the left corner for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
The Blackbirds postseason chances were also riding on the game, and they did not give up without a fight. LIU had several offensive chances, gaining 10 corner kicks in the game. Steve Jakubowski converted one of those corner kicks in the 27th minute. Craig Stant sent the ball in from the corner and Jaskubowski got a header off, sending the ball inside the left goalpost to tie the score.
SHU's William Richards (Commack, NY) set-up the game-winning goal with a long run in the 72nd minute. As he approached the box, the sophomore put a crossing pass in the air towards the far post. Celikkaya flew in and the ball hit his foot, redirecting into the corner of the goal for the score.
Adam Janssen made two saves in goal for LIU while senior Matt Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England) made one save to earn the victory for Sacred Heart.
The Pioneers will close out the regular season against St. Francis (NY) on Sunday. Senior Day festivities will precede the game which is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
