Fairfield, CT - Freshman foward Jason Tessitore (Ansonia, CT/Amity) and freshman defenseman Anthony Anzevui (Newcastle, England/Monkseaton) were each named to the All-NEC first team Thursday. Freshman goaltender Matthew Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England/Sandon) was named to the All-Conference second team. This is the first time that a Pioneer has been named to the All-NEC first team.
Tessitore quickly developed into one of the most feared goal scorers in the conference and is currently tied for the lead among NEC freshman with eight tallies and ranks third overall in the conference. He is also the second-leading scorer among freshmen and stands fourth in the conference with 17 points during the regular season. Anzevui is one of the ringleaders of a defense that yielded just seven goals in nine league games and has allowed one goal or less in nine straight matches.
Jones ranks second in the conference and 11th in the nation with an .835 save percentage. Jones, who permitted just four goals during the Pioneers' recent eight-game unbeaten streak, is also second in the NEC with seven shutouts.
The Pioneers finished the regular season with a record of 7-6-4 overall and 4-2-3 in the conference. After recording just one point in conference play all last season, they completed the second biggest turnaround in NEC history, garnering 15 points. That earned the Pioneers the fourth seed in this weekend's conference tournament. The Pioneers face top seed and host Monmouth Friday in the semifinals Friday at 11:00 am.
