FAIRFIELD, CT (April 7, 2011) - The Sacred Heart men's tennis team improved to 4-2 against Northeast Conference competition this spring thanks to a 5-2 win over league rival Quinnipiac Thursday afternoon on the SHU Tennis Courts. The Pioneer women's team dropped their third-straight league match falling to the Bobocats, 7-0. The SHU women are 3-3 against the NEC this year.
SHU senior and defending NEC Tennis Player of the Year Kirill Kasyanov (Yonkers, NY) continued his winning ways on Thursday notching his 15th-consecutive singles victory while improving to 24-6 on the year. Kasyanov beat Andrew Weeden in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-3, at #1 to stay a perfect 6-0 against opponents from the NEC this year.
After losing the doubles point, Kasyanov led the Pioneers to five wins over the six singles matches to seal the win. Junior Chadd Sullo (Orange, CT) won his fifth-straight singles match and improved to 9-1 in his last 10 matches with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at #5 over Corey Morgenstern.
Senior Chris Ujkic (Mattituck) fought his way to a three-set victory over Brian Mikkelson at #2, winning the first set 6-4 and then rebounding from a 6-4 loss in the second to take the third, 6-3. Seniors Michael Syer (Oakville, CT) and Cole Conrad (Fairfield, CT) both earned singles wins as well. Syer beat Alex Lazerowich at #4, 6-0, 7-5 and Conrad went on to beat Dillon Kraus, 6-2, 6-0, at #6.
The team of Conrad and senior Nick Mazzarese (Stonington, CT) did earn a doubles win beating Micah Bailey and Morgenstern at #3, 8-4.
The SHU men have a busy weekend in store as they take on St. Francis (NY) on Saturday and host Niagara and Fordam on Sunday, all on the SHU Tennis Courts. The Pioneer women travel to NJIT on Sunday afternoon.
