ORLANDO, Fla. - The Pioneer men's tennis team opened their Florida trip with a 6-1 win over South Dakota State before falling 5-2 to Northern Illinois. Sacred Heart will close out their annual Spring Break trip by facing the Moravian on Wednesday.
Junior Kirill Kasyanov (Yonkers, NY) beat Corey Paluch of South Dakota State at #1 6-3, 7-5 to lead the Pioneers past the Jackrabbits. He also helped SHU win the doubles point by teaming with junior Nick Mazzerese at #3 for an 8-6 over Justin Pyle and Alex Lauseng. Against Northern Illinois, he dropped his singles match at #1, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 to Maksym Bartiuk but won at #3 doubles with sophomore Chadd Sullo (Orange, CT), 8-2 over Max Phillips and Greg Czajkowski.
Mazzarese helped lead the singles charge against the Jackrabbits, winning at #4 6-0, 6-0 over Alex Lauseng. Junior Adam Gart (Bedford, MA) beat Jamie Dash at #3 singles, 6-3, 6-2 and junior Michael Syer (Oakville, Ontario) beat Justin Pyle, 7-6, 6-4 at #5. Sullo closed out singles play with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Morgan Salo at #6.
Syer and Gart teamed for an 8-2 win at #1 doubles, beating Dash and Dominic Rossetto. Junior Chris Ujkic (Mattituck, NY) and junior Cole Conrad (Fairfield, CT) clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win at #2 over Evan Sims and Dan Tully.
Against the Huskies, the Pioneers won the doubles point on the strenght of the Kasyanov and Sullo win along with a win at #1. The team of Mazzarese and Gart beat Mikhail Titov and Roman Turtygin, 8-4. SHU got their lone singles win at the #6 spot from Conrad who beat Greg Czajkowski, 6-1, 6-2.
