W. WINDSOR, NJ - The top-seeded Sacred Heart men's tennis team continued its title defense by shutting out No. 4 seed Monmouth, 4-0, at the Northeast Conference Championship at the Mercer County Outdoor Tennis Center on Saturday. The win puts the Pioneers in the championship match on Sunday against Quinnipiac University.
Sophomore Chad Sullo (Orange, CT) posted his second straight-set win in two days at No. 6 singles, downing Monmouth junior Oliver Grimbly, 6-1, 7-5. Sacred Heart juniors Adam Gart (Bedford, MA) and Michael Syer (Oakville, Ontario) were also straight-set winners.
SHU two of the three doubles matches to win that point, led by Kirill Kasyanov (Yonkers, NY) and Nick Mazzarese (Stonington) with an 8-3 victory over Ben Dashiell and Oliver Grimbly. Cole Conrad (Fairfield, CT) and Chris Ujkic (Mattituck, NY) also won their doubles tussle, 8-4.
No. 3 seed Quinnipiac is the lone obstacle standing in the way of Sacred Heart's repeat bid. Set to take on the Merritt Parkway rival Pioneers in Sunday's title match, Quinnipiac outlasted No. 2 seed Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-3, to advance past the semifinal round for the fifth time in seven years. The match will start at 10 a.m.
