FAIRFIELD, Conn. (March 2, 2010) - Sacred Heart junior Kirill Kasyanov (Yonkers, NY) was named the Northeast Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Month for February by the league office on Wednesday.
Kasyanov opened his spring season in the same way he closed the fall campaign, winning a Northeast Conference accolade. The third-year Pioneer posted a 4-2 record at No. 1 singles to capture the NEC Player of the Month award. He most recently knocked off a pair of regional rivals in team victories over Holy Cross and Bryant. Kasyanov dominated Matt Wierzel, 6-1, 6-0, in a 7-0 team shutout of the Crusaders. Then, in SHU's 5-2 win over NEC newcomer Bryant, Kasyanov again won in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5. The Pioneers' top player downed Dartmouth's Stephen Greif in his first match of the spring semester before notching a win over NJIT's Fraser Croad, both in straight sets. One of Kasyanov's rare setbacks came at the hands of Dartmouth's Dan Freeman in a third-set tiebreaker at the ECAC Championships.
