Both Pioneer Men and Women Picked Third In NEC Track and Field Coaches Poll
(Fairfield, CT) - Both the Sacred Heart Men's and Women's Track and Field teams were picked to finish third in the Northeast Conference Coaches Poll, released Thursday, February 3. The NEC Indoor Championships are set to take place next weekend, February 12-13, at the Prince George Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, MD.
The Pioneers men have been led this year by junior hurdler Bertony Jean-Louis (Norwalk, CT), the defending NEC Champion of the event. This season, he has twice clocked in at 8.01 seconds, breaking his own school record and making him one of only 50 NCAA Division I hurdlers to have run at least that fast this season. His sophomore teammate Jeremy Rosado (Brooklyn, NY) also has had a good year, being named NEC Athlete of the Week after setting a personal best time of 7.56 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles at the Connecticut Track Conference Relays on December 5. Brandon Hutchinson (Bay Shore, NY) has also been a bright spot for the team in the long jump and triple jump, twice being named NEC Rookie of the Week.
The Pioneers women feature one of the league's best in both the sprints and distance department. Senior Angelica Johnson (Little Ferry, NJ) is currently second on the 60-meter dash leader board at 7.67 seconds, while veteran Kimberly DeLoreto (Hillsdale, NJ) has run NEC's top mile time of 5:02.42. Ashley Matakevich (Stratford, CT) has seen success in both the long jump (5.51m) and triple jump (11.31m), while Athalia Smith (New Britain, CT) has dominated the weight throw at 17.10 m.
