LANDOVER, MD (February 12, 2012) - The Sacred Heart men's track & field team finished second and the women took home third on the final day of the 2012 Northeast Conference Indoor Championships Sunday at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex. The two teams had a combined four individual medalists at this year's event.
For the men, senior Bertony Jean-Louis (Norwalk, CT) claimed the title in the 60-meter hurdles, edging out junior teammate Jeremy Rosado (Brooklyn, NY) with an IC4A qualfying time of 8.02 seconds. Rosado was second in 8.10 seconds. On day one, sophomore Drayke Jackson (East Northport, NY) won the high jump with a clearing leap of 2.07 meters, meeting the IC4A qualfying standard.
On the women's side, senior Athalia Smith (New Britain, CT) won the weight throw event with an ECAC qualifying toss of 18.22 meters. On Saturday, sophomore Brittney Lane (Greenwich, NY) took home medalist honors in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:51.47, meeting the ECAC standard.
The Monmouth Hawks claimed both team titles with the men scoring 170 points and the women edging out two-time defending champion LIU Brooklyn, 143 to 142. The SHU men finished second with 116 total points and the women took third with 109.5 points.
In the men's 400 meters, freshman Warner Cooley (Central Islip, NY) took home fifth with a time of 50.49 seconds and junior Matthew Lyhne (Wethersfield, CT) was seventh in 51.06 seconds. In the 800 meters, sophomore Patrick Peterson (Gloversville, NY) was second with an IC4A qualfying time of 1:52.56. Junior Nicholas Arena (Brewster, NY) was sixth with a time of 1:55.96.
In the mile, seniors Jeffrey Lusignan (East Montpelier, VT) and Andrew Houghtalen (West Charlton, NY) finished third and fourth, respectively. Lusignan clocked in at 4:15.35 with Houghtalen right behind in 4:16.06. Lusignan finished third in the 3,000 meters on Saturday. In the 5,000 meters, junior Christopher Connelly (Medford, NY) took fourth in a time of 14:59.25.
The pole vault event saw sophomore Scott Polis (East Patchogue, NY) finished third overall with a height of 4.55 meters and sophomore Tyler Duhamel (Cumberland, RI) take eighth at a height of 4.05 meters. Sophomore Brandon Hutchinson (Bay Shore, NY), who finished second in the long jump on Saturday, took fourth in the triple jump on day two. Hutchinson registered a leap of 14.02 meters. In fifth was Jean-Louis who had a leap of 13.96 meters. In the shot put, sophomore Marc Troiani (Valhalla, NY) was seventh with a throw of 15.57 meters. He took fifth in the weight throw on Saturday.
Senior Brittany Heninger (Bristol, CT) added a second place finish in the mile to her third place finish in the 3,000 on Saturday. Heninger clocked in at 4:59.03, an ECAC qualfying time. Senior Brittany Llobell (West Sayville, NY) finished eighth with a time of 5:09.87.
SHU claimed four of the top-six spots in the 5,000 meters led by Lane who took home second with a time of 17:35.55. Junior Alyssa Selmquist (Northford, CT) was fourth (17:56.74), Heninger was fifth (18:03.50) and sophomore Brianna Castrogivanni (Commack, NY) was sixth (18:14.42).
Senior Ashley Matakevich (Stratford, CT) finished fourth in the triple jump on Sunday with a leap of 11.45 meters, adding to her fourth place in the long jump on Saturday. In the weight throw, three other Pioneers joined Smith in the top eight finishers. Sophomore Kolbi Smith (Valatie, NY) was second with an ECAC qualfying throw of 18.22 meters. Seniors Chantaul Smith (New Britain, CT) and Christine Middleton (Colchester, CT) were seventh and eighth with throws of 15.62 meters and 15.20 meters.
